Coming at you from the Lenapehoking side of Turtle Island, Cactus Rose NYC is a Black and Indigenous Americana trio composed of Kandia Crazy Horse, Lonnie Harrington, and Jeff McLaughlin whose first EP came out last year and who – in a perfect match – are currently opening shows for Valerie June. Crazy Horse, a pivotal rock writer before she began her striking work as a recording artist, writes songs that uncover and recombine the many threads of Americana traditions and center the experiences of Native people often romanticized or forgotten (but very rarely amplified) within them. “Dahlonega (Gold Rush),” which ends the group’s debut, is the best example. Over a churning Buffalo Springfield-recalling groove, Crazy Horse – with her ringing, resonant alto – details forced Cherokee removal in a lyric that balances plainspoken reportage with the epically-tragic imagery that such a catastrophe requires. Beautiful stuff, hopefully the beginning of many more recordings from these necessary voices. – Charles Hughes – No Fences Review
